Epoxy Consolidant and Filler Systems

Full Section Replacement
When structural members are compromised, they must be replaced. Sill plates, posts carrying roof or deck loads, and deck ledgers cannot be consolidated and left in place. Full replacement means properly supported temporary bracing, removal of the compromised member, and installation of new material with correct flashing, back-priming, and hardware.
Sistering
For floor joists or rafters that are partially compromised but cannot be fully removed, sistering — installing a new full-length member alongside the damaged one and connecting them — transfers the load to sound wood. PVC Trim (Azek, KOMA, Versatex)

Boral TruExterior
A fiber-cement and fly ash composite that machines like wood, holds paint better than PVC trim, and is fully rot-proof. It is heavier than PVC trim and requires carbide-tipped tooling to cut cleanly.
Real Wood: When and What
Real wood replacement should be limited to historic district applications where Barnstable Historic District Commission or local historic commission approval requires it, or to applications where the dimensional accuracy of milled wood is structurally necessary. When wood is required, use Accoya — acetylated radiata pine that has been dimensionally stabilized and is rated for ground contact and full exterior exposure — or clear vertical-grain Douglas fir primed on all six faces before installation. Prevention: What Actually Works Here
Back-prime all wood before installation. The back face of exterior trim — the face against the sheathing — is never seen and almost never painted in field conditions. It absorbs moisture from the wall side. Prime it before it goes up, every time.
Flash every horizontal wood-to-masonry transition. Where a post sits on concrete, where a deck ledger meets the house, where a sill plate sits on a foundation — all of these transitions need flashing lapped to direct water away from the wood. Use high-movement caulk at all joints. Standard acrylic caulk has limited movement capacity and fails at trim joints within a few years on Cape Cod. Use Sashco Big Stretch or a comparable STPE or polyurethane caulk formulated for high-movement applications. It will outlast standard caulk by a factor of three in this climate.
Repaint on a 5-to-7-year cycle. Cape Cod's UV intensity and salt air degrade paint faster than most paint manufacturers' ratings assume. Those ratings are tested in controlled environments.
