Off-Cape (Plymouth/Wareham)

America's Hometown & the mainland gateway to the Cape.

Off-Cape (Plymouth/Wareham) landscape

Overview

Just before the bridges, Plymouth and Wareham are the mainland gateway to Cape Cod — technically NOT on the Cape, but a natural first or last stop on any Cape trip. Plymouth is 'America's Hometown,' home to Plymouth Rock, the Mayflower II, and the living-history Plimoth Patuxet Museums. Wareham sits at the western mouth of the Cape Cod Canal, with the charming seaside village of Onset. A great place to break up the drive or add a day of history.

Known For

• Plymouth Rock & Mayflower II at the waterfront • Plimoth Patuxet Museums — living-history 1620s village & Wampanoag homesite • Historic downtown Plymouth, harbor cruises, whale watches • Onset village & beach (Wareham) • western end of the Cape Cod Canal • Cranberry-bog country

Getting There

Right off Route 3 (Plymouth) and Routes 6/28/25 (Wareham), just before the Bourne/Sagamore Bridges. About 45 min from Boston — the last mainland exits before Cape Cod.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round. Plymouth's historic sites are busiest around Thanksgiving and summer; spring and fall are pleasant and uncrowded. Onset Beach and canal activity peak in summer.

Good to Know

• Note: this is the mainland — not Cape Cod itself — but an easy add-on to a Cape trip • Great strategy: tour Plymouth on your way ON or OFF the Cape to dodge bridge traffic • Plimoth Patuxet is seasonal (roughly March–November) — check hours • Onset is a quieter, family-friendly alternative to crowded Cape beaches

Highlights

Plymouth Rock & Mayflower II • Plimoth Patuxet Museums • Plymouth waterfront & whale watch • Onset Beach • Cape Cod Canal (west end) • cranberry bogs
