Great Island Trail

Hard · 8.8 mi · Sand

Cape Cod National Seashore's most challenging and iconic hike, threading a narrow peninsula between Wellfleet Harbor and Cape Cod Bay. Mostly soft sand with pitch-pine forest on the higher ground of Great Island and Great Beach Hill; up to about 8.8 miles round trip to the Jeremy Point overlook (a shorter ~3.9-mile loop reaches the Tavern site). Sweeping views of the Herring River, harbor, dunes, and bay. Sections flood at high tide — check tide charts. Allow 3-5 hours. Dogs are not permitted on this trail.

Early Bird Guided Birding Walk

Follow a naturalist through pine woods, salt marsh and barrier beach in search of songbirds and shorebirds. A gentle, all-levels intro to the birds of the Outer Cape.

Cahoon Hollow Beach

Cahoon Hollow Beach is Wellfleet's social epicenter on the Atlantic side, home to The Beachcomber — a legendary open-air bar and restaurant perched atop the bluffs that has made the post-surf tradition here as much a Cape rite of passage as the beach itself. The ocean beach is classic Outer Cape: wide, east-facing for sunrise, backed by dramatic sand cliffs, and breaking with powerful surf that rewards experienced swimmers. Arrive early on summer days — the lot fills fast once The Beachcomber opens.

Cape Cod Catamaran — Sailing & Billingsgate Island

Sail aboard the S/V Discovery for morning, afternoon, or sunset trips out of Wellfleet Harbor. Day sails include a stop at Billingsgate Island — a submerged island that was once a thriving town, now a sandbar with lighthouse ruins that appear at low tide.
