Golf on Cape Cod: Best Courses, Tips & When to Play

Cape Cod is one of the best golf destinations on the East Coast — and it's still one of the most underrated. More than 40 courses are spread across the peninsula and islands, ranging from centuries-old links perched above ocean cliffs to affordable municipal layouts tucked into the pines.

The Courses Worth Knowing

Highland Golf Links — Truro

Established in 1892, the Cape's oldest course. Sits on the edge of the Cape Cod National Seashore with fairways running right up to the bluffs above the Atlantic. A 9-hole layout that plays firm and fast, with wind a constant factor.

Captains Golf Course — Brewster

36 holes — Port and Starboard — consistently ranked among New England's best public courses. Book early: tee times disappear weeks in advance in peak summer season.

Ocean Edge Golf Course — Brewster

Resort course attached to Ocean Edge Resort. More accessible than Captains — good option for mixed abilities.

Sandwich Hollows Golf Club — Sandwich

Public, affordable, well-reviewed. Near the Upper Cape entrance to the Mid-Cape Highway.

Falmouth and New Seabury Area — Falmouth and Mashpee

Scenic private and semi-private courses near Nantucket Sound. Call ahead to understand access options.

Chequessett Yacht and Country Club — Wellfleet

Private club. The Outer Cape's premier course. Requires member invitation or reciprocal arrangement.

When to Play: The Secret Is Fall

September and October are when serious golfers plan their trips:

  • Temperatures drop to comfortable 60s and 70s
  • Courses are nowhere near as congested as summer
  • Green fees ease after Labor Day
  • Courses are in top shape after a full summer of maintenance
  • Mid-October brings fall foliage on wooded parkland courses

Summer Booking Reality

Popular courses fill weeks in advance. Don't assume you can walk up. Captains has online booking — use it. Book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.

A Few Practical Notes

Bring a wind game — Cape Cod is windy. Layer up in the morning even in summer. Call ahead if you're unsure about access to semi-private or private courses.
