Most people cross the Sagamore Bridge and drive straight through Sandwich without stopping. That's a mistake. The oldest town on Cape Cod — settled in 1637, more than 380 years ago — sits right at the elbow of the bridge, and it holds more concentrated history, green space, and genuine quiet than anywhere else on the Upper Cape.
Morning: Start at the Sandwich Glass Museum
Open early, walkable from downtown, and genuinely surprising in its depth — the Sandwich Glass Museum is not the dusty small-town museum you might picture. The Boston & Sandwich Glass Company ran here from 1825 to 1888. Live glassblowing demonstrations run on a schedule (check their hours before you go).
After the museum, walk the downtown center along Main Street. The Old Town Hall and surrounding buildings are some of the best-preserved early-American commercial architecture on the Cape.
Midday: Heritage Museums & Gardens
About a mile from downtown, Heritage Museums & Gardens occupies 76 acres. Beyond the gardens, the antique automobile collection is worth the detour on its own. Plan at least two hours here, more if you're a slow wanderer.
Afternoon: The Boardwalk and Town Neck Beach
The Sandwich Boardwalk extends 1,350 feet through open salt marsh out to Town Neck Beach on Cape Cod Bay, and it is one of the most genuinely peaceful walks on the Cape.
At the end, Town Neck Beach opens onto Cape Cod Bay with clear views north to Plymouth across the water. Tidal flats here can extend quite far at low tide, making for good walking and easy wading with kids.
If you have time before dinner, the Sandwich Fish Hatchery on Rte 6A is free to visit and is the oldest state-operated fish hatchery in the United States.
Evening: Sunset Over the Bay
For dinner, Route 6A through Sandwich and into Barnstable has a handful of well-regarded options. Sunset from Town Neck Beach or the boardwalk is the right way to end the day. Because Town Neck faces west across Cape Cod Bay, you get a full Bay-side sunset — the water reflects the color straight back at you.
Practical Notes
- Parking downtown: Street parking along Main Street is free and usually available on weekdays.
- Town Neck Beach parking: The lot at the boardwalk trailhead is small. Arrive before noon on summer weekends.
- Best season: May through October. Heritage Museums' rhododendrons peak mid-May to early June.
- Tides: Cape Cod Bay has significant tidal range. Check tides.net before you go.
- With kids: The Heritage carousel, the fish hatchery, and the tidal flats at Town Neck are the three highest-yield stops.
