The rental calendar is winding down, the beach parking lots are still full, and — quietly, in the background — the Atlantic hurricane season is climbing toward its statistical peak. The National Hurricane Center consistently identifies the stretch from mid-August through October as the most active window of the year, and Cape Cod's exposed geography means even a glancing storm can knock down a service drop, saturate a meter socket, or push saltwater into places it was never meant to reach.
That combination — the tail end of a heavy-use rental season plus the front end of storm season — is exactly why late summer is the smartest time to walk through your home's electrical system with a critical eye. You've just put your wiring through three months of hair dryers, window ACs, hot tubs, EV chargers, and rental-guest plug loads. And you're about to ask it to survive nor'easters, coastal flooding, and the freeze-thaw cycles that begin in earnest by November.
Here's a practical, Cape-specific electrical safety checklist for homeowners and second-home owners — with notes on which incentives and code items to verify before you spend money.
1. Start With What Salt Air Has Been Doing All Summer
Cape Cod's marine environment is uniquely brutal on electrical hardware. Homes in Truro, Wellfleet, Chatham, Falmouth, and along any of the bay-side or ocean-side neighborhoods routinely show corrosion on:
- Exterior receptacles (especially non-weather-resistant older models)
- Meter socket lugs and service entrance conductors
