Knob-and-tube wiring was the standard residential electrical system from roughly 1880 through 1940. The system runs individual cloth-wrapped or rubber-insulated conductors through ceramic knobs — small porcelain insulators that support the wire away from framing — and through ceramic tubes where the wire passes through floor joists, studs, or other wood members.
