Overview
Nantucket is a single island town 30 miles out to sea — its Wampanoag name means 'faraway land,' and it is NOT part of Cape Cod. The entire island is a remarkably preserved time capsule of the 1800s whaling era: cobblestone Main Street, gray-shingled cottages, and rose-covered fences, all protected as a National Historic Landmark District. Smaller and more exclusive than Martha's Vineyard, it's a polished, walkable escape of world-class beaches, biking, and history.

Getting There
By ferry from Hyannis — Steamship Authority (2 hr 15 min traditional / car ferry; 1 hr fast ferry) and Hy-Line (1 hr high-speed). Or fly into Nantucket Memorial Airport (ACK). The island is very walkable and bike-friendly — most visitors skip the car.
Best Time to Visit
Late June–August for full season; the Daffodil Festival (late April) and Christmas Stroll (early December) are beloved bookends. September is warm and calmer. The island is quiet and many places close in winter.
Good to Know
• Nantucket is expensive — book lodging and ferries far in advance, especially for summer weekends • You rarely need a car: bike paths reach all the major beaches, plus seasonal NRTA shuttle buses • Car-ferry reservations are scarce in summer; foot-passenger fast ferries are the easy way over • Pack layers — it's cooler and breezier than the mainland, even in summer
