Mid Cape
The Cape's hub — ferries, dining, and the Kennedy legacy.

Overview
The Mid Cape is the busy, central heart of Cape Cod — anchored by Hyannis, the Cape's transportation hub and the gateway to the islands. This is the most convenient base for getting anywhere: ferries to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, the regional airport, the best concentration of restaurants and shops, and warm south-facing beaches on Nantucket Sound. It spans the Town of Barnstable and its seven villages plus Yarmouth and Dennis.

Mid CapeKnown For
• Hyannis — ferries to Nantucket & Martha's Vineyard, Main Street, JFK Hyannis Museum & Kennedy Legacy Trail • Warm, calm south-shore beaches on Nantucket Sound (Craigville, Kalmus, West Dennis) • Cape Playhouse (Dennis) — America's oldest professional summer theater • Scargo Tower sunset views • Cape Cod Rail Trail northern end • Village charm in Osterville, Cotuit & Barnstable Village
Getting There
Route 6 (Exits 68–82) runs the spine. Hyannis is the Cape's hub: Steamship Authority + Hy-Line ferries to the islands, Cape Cod Gateway Airport (HYA), and Cape Cod Regional Transit buses. About 1 hr 15–30 min from Boston.
Best Time to Visit
Year-round appeal — Hyannis stays lively off-season. Peak beach + ferry season is late June–August; book island ferries and parking ahead. Spring and fall are great for the Rail Trail and dining without crowds.
Good to Know
• Hyannis ferry lots fill in summer — reserve parking and fast-ferry tickets in advance • South-shore (Sound) beaches are warmer and calmer than the Atlantic side — ideal for young kids • Route 28 through Hyannis/Yarmouth is the Cape's busiest commercial strip; expect slow traffic mid-day • Great base if you're island-hopping or want one central home for day trips
