A spectacular 6-mile barrier beach on Cape Cod Bay, one of the Cape's most wild and pristine. Wide dunes, salt marsh, and ancient cedar forests. The main parking and gatehouse entrance is in West Barnstable off Sandy Neck Road.
A small Cape Cod Bay beach at the mouth of Barnstable Harbor, adjacent to the town pier where whale watch and fishing charter boats depart. Great for watching boat traffic and kayak launching.
Easy · 2 miQuiet conservation trails through woodland and salt marsh bordering Scorton Creek, one of the most ecologically rich tidal creek systems on Cape Cod. The creek is a prime spot for herons, egrets, and osprey. A canoe or kayak launch is accessible from the trailhead, making this popular with paddlers as well as walkers and birders.
Town of Barnstable for Scorton Creek Conservation Area (opens in a new tab)The main trail system traversing Sandy Neck's barrier beach and dune complex — one of the largest undeveloped barrier beaches on the East Coast. Trails wind through ancient dunes, pitch pine/oak forest, and salt marsh. The outer beach walk along Cape Cod Bay offers sweeping views. A truly wild Cape Cod experience. Dogs permitted on leash. Expect soft sand — sturdy footwear advised.
Town of Barnstable for Sandy Neck Trail (Dune System) (opens in a new tab)Mass Audubon's Long Pasture sanctuary offers 2.5 miles of gentle woodland and meadow trails leading to overlooks of Barnstable Harbor and Sandy Neck Barrier Beach. Highlights include a short marsh boardwalk into the Barnstable Great Marsh, the Butterfly Mosaic Trail's native wildflower plots, and an accessible All Persons Trail (firm stone dust) with a platform extending into Night Heron Pond for accessible birding. Dogs are not allowed; service animals welcome.
Mass Audubon for Long Pasture Wildlife Sanctuary (opens in a new tab)At ~1,200 acres, this is the largest town conservation area on Cape Cod, famous among riders as the 'Trail of Tears' (TOT). Roughly 20+ miles of twisty, rolling singletrack wind through pine-oak forest with short technical climbs, rock gardens, and patches of soft sand. Primarily a mountain-biking destination, it's also popular for hiking, trail running, and cross-country skiing. Note: hunting is permitted in season, so wear blaze orange in fall/winter.
Town of Barnstable Conservation Division / Barnstable Land Trust for West Barnstable Conservation Area (Trail of Tears) (opens in a new tab)About 2.5 miles of easy walking trails through ~246 acres of remarkably diverse wetland habitat: stone walls, abandoned cranberry bogs, tidal and freshwater streams, open marsh, and hardwood swamp. The northern trail toward Route 6A crosses a boardwalk and two bridges with views over Bridge Creek marsh, excellent for birdwatching. Connects to Jenkins Wildlife Sanctuary and Bridge Street Conservation Area for longer loops.
Town of Barnstable Conservation Division for Bridge Creek Conservation Area (opens in a new tab)About 180 acres laced with several miles of double-track and singletrack trails winding over rolling drumlin hills through pine, oak, and holly woods. Loops range from roughly 1 to 4 miles. Some steeper grades make it a favorite of hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. Trails such as Hills and Dales, Picnic, Aunt Hatch, and Pine Trail are well loved. Leashed dogs welcome.
