Mid Cape · Town guide
Barnstable Village is the town's old north-side seat — and still the county's. The Barnstable County complex is here, along with a stretch of Route 6A that reads like a history lesson: the Sturgis Library, whose original 1644 house is the oldest building housing a public library in the United States; the Olde Colonial Courthouse, where a 1774 protest led by James Otis halted the king's court; and Crocker Tavern, a Revolutionary-era meeting place (Wikipedia, Barnstable Village,Massachusetts)).
