9:30–10:30 AM: The critical window. Lots at the most popular beaches close on hot, sunny peak-season days. If you haven't left your rental by 9:00 AM, you're gambling.
After 11:00 AM: At full lots, you're turned away. The backup plan becomes the plan.
Afternoon re-entry: Lots often open up again after 2:00–3:00 PM as morning visitors leave. If you're flexible, arriving at 2:00 PM often works — though conditions and cloud cover have usually deteriorated by then.
The Shuttle Alternative: Coast Guard Beach
Coast Guard Beach in Eastham is consistently ranked among the best beaches on the East Coast. It doesn't have a main lot — which is actually an advantage.
- Park at the Salt Pond Visitor Center (free) or the Little Creek overflow lot
- Take the NPS shuttle to the beach (typically included in the $25 day fee)
